Gran Coyote Golf: Where Championship Design Meets Jungle Adventure

If you’ve ever wanted to play a course where world-class design, tropical wildlife, and jungle-to-sea winds collide in the most entertaining way possible, Gran Coyote Golf in Playa del Carmen is exactly the kind of round you’re hoping for.  Gran Coyote, formerly Grand Coral, is one of the most pleasantly surprising golf experiences in the Riviera Maya. Designed by Nick Price, the course stretches 7,043 yards through pockets of Mayan jungle, subtle coastal terrain, and wide-open landing zones that make the round feel playable even for mid-handicappers. It’s a par-71 that strikes an impressive balance: gentle enough to welcome vacation golfers, yet structured enough to keep better players dialed in. And while you may arrive expecting a standard resort layout, what you actually find is a vibrant, well-conditioned, honest golf course that delivers far more personality than you’d imagine.

1. Instagram vs. Reality – Does It Live Up to the Hype?

Gran Coyote looks exactly like the photos, but with more wildlife and more color. There are drone-shot moments here, especially on Holes 5 and 13, that feel straight out of a tourism ad.

2. Clubhouse & Pro Shop Vibes

Modern, clean, and friendly. The pro shop is well-stocked and the staff is incredibly welcoming.  Just a note that we didn't see any type of 19th-hole lounge for margaritas and story swapping, but that was fine with us...our resort was not far away and the free shuttle service was a great bonus!

3. Greens Personality

Fast, firm, smooth, and consistent, exactly what you want on vacation golf. No weird patches or bumpy surprises, and the Paspalum really shines in the conditioning department.

4. Fairway Forgiveness

Generous landing zones make it playable for all handicaps, but the jungle lurks just a few yards off the short grass which encourages smart, thoughtful shot selection.

5. Pace of Play Reality

Very solid. Most rounds finish comfortably under four hours thanks to proactive marshals and a layout that encourages flow rather than bottlenecks.

6. Signature Hole Swagger

Hole 5 absolutely delivers. Between the lake, the bunkers, the winds, and the large “COYOTE” landmark, it’s impossible not to take a photo here.

7. Scorecard Survivability

Mid-handicappers should feel confident, breaking 90 is very doable if you avoid the sand and manage the winds. The layout is tough but fair, never punishing without reason.

9. Best Par 3

Besides #5 already mentioned, Hole 13 holds it's own also. The ocean-view backdrop, swirling coastal winds, and hidden bunkering combine for a “this is why I play golf” moment.

Final Verdict: Is Gran Coyote Worth Checking Out?

Gran Coyote Golf is everything you want in a Riviera Maya golf experience...fun, scenic, well-maintained, and just challenging enough. The combination of Nick Price’s smart design, excellent conditions, and nonstop wildlife makes every round feel memorable. If you’re in Playa del Carmen and want a course that delivers both quality and pure enjoyment, Gran Coyote is worth checking out.
