Greywolf Golf Course isn't just another scenic mountain layout, it's an experience that somehow manages to be breathtaking, intimidating, and ridiculously fun all at the same time. Nestled at Panorama Mountain Resort in British Columbia's Purcell Mountains, Greywolf combines dramatic elevation changes, immaculate playing surfaces, and strategic design that rewards smart golf more than perfect golf. The famous Cliffhanger par 3 may steal the headlines, but it's only one chapter in a course packed with unforgettable holes. Wide fairways keep hope alive for everyday golfers, while challenging approach shots and brilliantly protected greens ensure you'll have to earn every par.
Usually, when a course gets labeled as one of Canada's best, expectations become almost impossible to satisfy. Here, the opposite happens. Every time you reach another elevated tee box, another mountain vista, or another perfectly framed fairway, you realize the photos never quite capture how spectacular this place really is.
The opening three holes immediately let you know this isn't your neighborhood municipal course. You're climbing straight into the mountains, and while the uphill approaches require careful club selection, they also introduce one of Greywolf's biggest themes: trust your yardages. Between elevation changes and thinner mountain air, your normal distances need adjusting throughout the day. Once you reach the fourth tee, everything changes. Standing on one of the highest points on the property, you're rewarded with one of those downhill tee shots that makes you feel like a tour pro. Drives seem to stay in the air forever before bouncing another 40 yards down beautifully manicured fairways.
Then comes the sixth.
Cliffhanger deserves every ounce of praise it's received over the years. This isn't a gimmick hole. It's a genuine test of nerve and commitment. Roughly 200 yards across a massive canyon to a tiny peninsula green perched on a rocky cliff? There isn't much room for second-guessing. Pick your club, trust your swing, and let it fly. Whether you hit the green or not, it's one of those shots you'll replay in your head long after the round ends.
One of the biggest surprises is how playable Greywolf actually is. With all the mountains, cliffs, forests and dramatic scenery, you'd expect narrow landing areas and endless lost balls. Instead, Doug Carrick wisely built generous fairways that give average golfers plenty of room. The real challenge begins once you're inside 150 yards. Firm greens, false fronts, elevation changes, and 67 brilliant white bunkers demand thoughtful approach shots rather than heroic recoveries. One thing you'll quickly notice is that nature owns this property. Deer casually wander across fairways, elk aren't uncommon, and yes, black bear sightings occasionally happen. It's all part of the authentic mountain experience.

1. Instagram vs. Reality
Unlike many courses that look better online than in person, Greywolf somehow looks even more spectacular once you're standing on the tee boxes. The drone footage is amazing, but it still doesn't prepare you for the scale of the mountains surrounding every hole.

The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed with friendly staff who do an excellent job preparing first time visitors for the mountain layout. The starter's course briefing is genuinely helpful rather than routine.

Fast, firm, and incredibly true. False fronts, subtle tiers, and tricky slopes reward precise iron play while punishing lazy approach shots.
4. Fairway Forgiveness
Much friendlier than you'd expect for a mountain course. Most fairways are surprisingly generous, giving all golf levels a chance for a good score.
5. Pace of Play Reality
Expect a leisurely day, especially during peak season. The terrain naturally slows groups down, along with all the photo opps. But overall the pace is great, and we easily finished in the allotted time, even on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of summer.
6. Snack Shack and Food Score
The Cliffhanger Restaurant and clubhouse food are resort quality that match the patio views, making the post round meal almost as memorable as the golf itself. It's exactly what you'd expect from a premier destination course.
7. Signature Hole Swagger
The famous "Cliffhanger" Par 3 #6 absolutely lives up to every bit of its reputation. Few golf holes in Canada, or anywhere else, create this much anticipation and deliver on every single shot.
8. Scorecard Survivability
Mid-handicappers can absolutely survive here thanks to the generous fairways, but distance control into the greens determines whether you're celebrating pars or writing doubles. Breaking 90 is realistic if you manage your emotions and your yardages.
9. Best Par 3
"Cliffhanger" gets the spotlight, and deservedly so. It's one of those rare holes that's every bit as thrilling on your fifth visit as it is on your first.
